Ship Abandonment

Ship abandonment is defined in the Maritime Labour Convention (2006) as an event where the ship owner has ceased communicating with their ship for more than eight weeks.

Ship abandonment happens when vessel owners stop communicating and leave seafarers stranded without pay, supplies or support. This serious issue affects the mental health and well-being of seafarers in Canadian ports and worldwide, often forcing them to remain on board for weeks.

We provide food, water, fuel, and advocacy so abandoned seafarers find care and justice.
