Seafarer Ministry Over the Years

Serving Seafarers since 1856

For over 160 years, we have provided practical, emotional, and spiritual support to seafarers of all nationalities and faiths.

Mission to Seafarers Canada is part of a global ministry dedicated to caring for the world’s seafarers, men and women who work tirelessly at sea to keep global trade moving.

Since 1856 Mission to Seafarers has shared God’s love and grace by standing alongside seafarers facing the difficult and isolating challenges of life at sea.

Our mission has always been compassionate, holistic, and inclusive, rooted in Christian values while honoring the beliefs and cultures of those we serve.

Our History

1836

Revd John Ashley

Our Founder Revd John Ashley established the Bristol Channel Mission after being struck by the loneliness and spiritual needs of Seafarers. He visited over 14,000 ships over the next 20 years.

Global Expansion

Global Expansion

From its humble beginnings, The Missions to Seamen was born in England, uniting several Anglican ministries in one organisation. Our organisation expanded globally to support the needs of people working at sea.

Seafarers visiting Canadian ports received spiritual care, medical services and support from British Mission to Seaman missionaries and local churches.

With more ships docking at Canadian ports annually, seafarer support continued to expand from coast to coast to offer help where it was needed most.

2000’s
With our new name Mission to Seafarers, we are there for over 11,500 seafarers arriving in 10 Canadian ports yearly. We support crews from cruise ships to container vessels, and everything in between.
