National Secretary, Mission to Seafarers Canada
Jim Calvesbert grew up in Ontario, where the Great Lakes likely sparked his lifelong passion for ships and the open water. This early interest led him to the Canadian Coast Guard College, where he was accepted as an officer cadet. Over four years, he received both academic and practical training, gaining his first experience at sea.
Upon graduating as a navigation officer, Jim served in the Maritimes, the St. Lawrence, and the Arctic. After certification on hovercraft in British Columbia, he returned to the Great Lakes and served aboard buoy tenders and Search and Rescue vessels. After earning his command certification, Jim returned to the Coast Guard College to instruct and take on leadership roles in training and management. Eventually, the call of operational service drew him back to sea and later to executive roles at the Coast Guard’s Maritime Regional Headquarters.
Jim retired after 35 years of distinguished service with the Canadian Coast Guard, carrying with him a lifetime of invaluable experience and meaningful memories.
Retirement, however, did not end his connection to the maritime world. Jim continued working as a marine consultant, both nationally and internationally, and later in port security and cruise operations.
Today, Jim serves as National Secretary of Mission to Seafarers Canada, as well as a ship visiting volunteer in Halifax. In this role, he remains dedicated to ensuring that every seafarer who arrives in port is met with warmth, safety, and hospitality. His commitment reflects a lifelong dedication to those who live and work at sea.
