Chairperson, Great Lakes Pilotage Authority
Board Member, Mission to Seafarers Canada
Captain Jim Pound brings over 48 years of experience in the marine industry, beginning his career as a deckhand aboard a Great Lakes vessel. A proud graduate of the Marine Navigation Program at Georgian College in Owen Sound, Jim rose through the ranks at Algoma Central Corporation, earning his Master’s Certificate and being promoted to Captain in 1984.
For a decade, he served as master of vessels navigating the Great Lakes and U.S. East Coast. In the mid-1990s, Jim transitioned ashore, taking on a series of leadership roles within Algoma, ultimately serving as Vice-President of Operations until his retirement in 2014.
In 2015, Jim was appointed to the Board of Directors for the Great Lakes Pilotage Authority (GLPA), a federal Crown corporation responsible for marine pilotage west of Montreal. He was named Chairperson of the GLPA in 2020, a role he continues to hold with distinction.
Jim’s dedication to seafarer welfare is deeply personal. He joined the Board of the Mission to Seafarers Toronto in 2009, later supporting the 2013 amalgamation of the Toronto and Hamilton missions into the Mission to Seafarers Southern Ontario (MTSSO). Since 2018, he has served as MTSSO’s representative on the Mission to Seafarers Canada (MtSC) Board.
As a former seafarer, Jim is passionate about supporting the men and women who keep global trade moving.
When he’s not advocating for maritime welfare, Jim enjoys golf, downhill skiing, and travel.
